Steph's Glass is Half Full

Optimistic (and often pessimistic) raves and rants about the many things that can go wrong with an old house, cats who leave me hairballs each day, a job I love but get burned out with and my wonderful husband who I at times, want to hiss at. Also included are my yays and nays about my travels into the world when performing necessary tasks such as grocery shopping, being thrown together with complete strangers, thrown together with strangers and their strangeness.

Updates

My brother Michael was discharged Monday. His blood pressure was stable, heart rate was good and the Drs. felt he would get more rest at home than in the hospital. They don't know my brother, a person who is always active and can't be idle.

Mike has large hematomas in his thigh and groin from the angioplasty that must be watched closely. If there is spread or swelling, it is a call to 911 and a transport to the hospital. The cardiac surgeon said only 5% of patients have such a complication after surgery.

Mike has a second angioplasty right before Thanksgiving when his body has ample time to recover a bit from the first one and the heart attack. We would like him to have more time to recover, but the blockage on the second side of his heart is severe and the procedure must be done as soon as possible.

As expected, Mike is feeling useless and wants to do more than he is allowed to. He is a problem patient who should be in restraints to prevent over exertion.

My new pen...I like it very much, but might be in total bliss if it had a medium nib. I got the fine nib and it writes a very fine line. I prefer a slighty thicker line, but am very happy with how the pen feels in my hand.

Two days off from work each week? Not happening yet. I was supposed to have Wednesdays off, but I realized there would be only one Asst. from 1:30-6:00. Not good. So I worked Wednesday and then changed the schedule giving myself Tuesday off. (I'm allowed to change the schedule since I'm in charge of it, but I'm a nice supervisor and put the needs and desires of others before my own). Next week a Vet. Asst. student from a local school is starting her hands on practicum and I'm her instructor. There goes my day off next week. Oh well. Sometime soon I will have two days off.

For my Vet. Technician practicum, I intubated my first dog Friday. YAY! I did it perfectly thanks to the instructions from Lana, the Tech. My next task was to intubate a cat which is much more difficult. Couldn't get the tube in so I gave it to Lana. I don't feel at all bad about not being able to intubate the cat because Lana also had a hard time with it.

Yes, the past month has been filled with grief, sadness and worry, but life also contains happiness and love. My dad-in-law was an optimistic person and received great joy in the little things that life brought each day. A penny found on the ground, a planted seed showing its growth above the soil, a treasure found in a thrift store...such little things made dad beam with his bright eyes and handsome smile. It's the little things that make a full life.
