A Tearful Goodbye to Inspector Hector
There are two types of FIP, a dry form and a wet form. The dry form causes progression of organ shut down. The wet form produces fluid in the abdomen which puts pressure on the diaphragm and causes labored breathing. Both forms cause great discomfort and pain.
Inspector Hector originally came to my rescue organization after being attacked by two dogs. He was lucky, no major injuries other than a couple of broken ribs which healed perfectly. Hector was a kitten who got into everything during his explorations, hence the nickname "Inspector". He loved people, loved sticking his nose into everything.
Hector was adopted by Epany and two weeks later he seemed "out of sorts, not himself". He was hospitalized at the Vet. clinic that helps us with our kittens. Of course we covered all of Hector's medical costs because he had been adopted just two weeks earlier. He had massive tests done, IV fluids, antibiotics, the whole works. All pointed to FIP. Epany visited Hector often during his hospital stay, holding and talking to him, never rushed, never worried about time. She just wanted to be with him and let him know he was loved.
Monday Hector was depressed, ate very little and his abdomen was slightly bloated. Tuesday he came out of his bed and explored the treatment area, but then spent the rest of the day in bed. His abdomen had more fluid. Wednesday he had labored breathing from the abdomen fluid pressing on his diaphragm, was wobbly on his feet and couldn't find a comfortable position to lie in.
We called Epany and she came with her parents to spend time saying good-bye to Hector. Even though she had Hector only two weeks in her home, she loved him deeply.
After Epany's visit, Cindi held Hector as he was euthanized and he began his journey to the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by love.
Epany's father is a preacher and his entire congregation was praying for Hector's return to good health. If Hector had all those prayers for him, his death makes me wonder what God had in mind by not answering those prayers. Was Hector here to bring more compassion to the animals of our Earth? Was his presence in all the lives he touched meant to bring awareness of all the stray animals who need help? Maybe remind people that Hector was born to a stray mother, so spay/neuter to prevent strays?
I don't know. But I do think Hector was here for a purpose and whatever that purpose is, I hope it succeeds.
Goodbye funny Inspector Hector. You gave us much laughs, love and joy. You will be healthy at the Rainbow Bridge and we will someday be with you again. We love you forever.
