Steph's Glass is Half Full

Optimistic (and often pessimistic) raves and rants about the many things that can go wrong with an old house, cats who leave me hairballs each day, a job I love but get burned out with and my wonderful husband who I at times, want to hiss at. Also included are my yays and nays about my travels into the world when performing necessary tasks such as grocery shopping, being thrown together with complete strangers, thrown together with strangers and their strangeness.

Staff Meeting

This Friday we have a staff meeting scheduled at the clinic. It's on the clock of course and lunch is always provided. Part of that meeting will be an insurance sales spiel by an agent who happens to be Dora's husband and who will be bringing pizza. I'm skipping that part of the meeting for two reasons; I have very good insurance with no desire to switch and I prefer getting paid for doing my job, not listening to an insurance sales pitch. So I miss out on pizza since I can't in good conscience help myself to free lunch if I'm not going to sit through the sales talk.

Ethical questions arise. We are owned by a corporation who offers insurance plans to employees. The clinic is closing for the meeting, no revenue coming in. Why are we closing to allow Dora's husband to give us a sales pitch on something that is available through the corporation and isn't even related to our jobs?

My brother owns a motorcycle shop. Can we close the clinic so he can come and try to talk us into buying a motorcycle from him? He will provide a much nicer lunch than pizza. What's the difference between Dora's husband and my brother?
I'm not paid to participate in unethical practices, I'll take care of the patients during the insurance part of the meeting.
