Steph's Glass is Half Full

Optimistic (and often pessimistic) raves and rants about the many things that can go wrong with an old house, cats who leave me hairballs each day, a job I love but get burned out with and my wonderful husband who I at times, want to hiss at. Also included are my yays and nays about my travels into the world when performing necessary tasks such as grocery shopping, being thrown together with complete strangers, thrown together with strangers and their strangeness.

Fire, Window, School Grades, oh my gosh

The vacant field that abuts our front yard had another brush fire today. Fortunately it was on the opposite end of the field, but one home on that side had half their backyard burned plus their storage shed. Kudos to the Tacoma Fire Dept. for responding within minutes. When I called the Fire Dept., I just saw smoke and a very tiny blaze. While on the phone with them, the flames reached to the sky and were stopped by the branches of a tall oak tree. The Fire Dept. arrived in time to save the tree. It suffered burns on just one side and hopefully will recover.

My office/craft room is on the main floor of our house and looks out onto the yard and front porch. Several years ago the window had a pellet shot through it which caused a small crack. Our tiny earthquake last year made the crack slightly longer. Today as I sat at my craft table looking out the window, I verbally said, "Oh my god, what the hell happened!"

The window is very cracked, tiny pieces of glass on the sill inside and outside, a large piece of glass is misplaced, sticking out just enough so I can't push it back into place. I cleaned up the sills to remove any tiny slivers of glass, swept the porch steps just in case there was any glass there. Can't have any cats getting glass slivers in their paws.

The glass companies Marty called can be out Monday at the earliest. In the meantime, my window is covered with plywood inside and out in case the glass decides to fall.

Some of you are probably thinking "Why not fix the window yourself?" It would be an easy fix on most windows, but this one needs a 50" x 45" sheet of glass, not an easy piece for a novice to handle) and a ladder to access the top plus porch steps that are not ladder friendly. I do not want Marty maneuvering a large piece of glass while standing on a ladder. Definately a job for an expert who has an capable assistant. Not a one person job.

The broken window is the big one in front, right above the steps.

The happy note for the past week: I took the last exam for the Diagnostic Imaging course of my Veterinary Technician schooling and scored 100. WOOHOO! My next course is Pharmacology.
