Duhduhduh Mabeline
Mabeline is 22 years old, no vet. clinic experience, but is a very good worker in some areas, shows initiative, tries to stay busy, is eager to learn and is quiet much of the time (unlike Mabel who never shuts up).
The problem with Mabeline...while she seems intelligent in some areas, she is duhduhduh in others. She can't remember to lock the clinic door even after receiving verbal reminders four/five times each evening for the past six weeks. When the clinic is closed, the doors need to be locked. Mabeline's mind doesn't grasp that.
Mabeline was hired specifically for Saturday and Sunday and I am there only to train her. Yet every Sunday Mabeline leaves for church or church seminars or church retreats. Now don't misinterpret me...I am not against attending church or anyone's religious viewpoints, but Mabeline said nothing about church when hired after being told multiple times during the interview that her work hours include Sunday.
Since being hired, she seemed to think that my presence at the clinic training her meant she could leave and I would do the weekend duties. I let her leave today, but told her, "Starting next weekend, you are on your own for the weekend shift. My regular weekend shift is Saturday 9AM to 3PM. I am leaving at 3. Sunday is your day of work, not mine, I'll be here to train you in patient treatments and then I'm leaving. The weekend duties are your job, not mine." Mabeline gave me a glaring look and then left for church. Yes, she forgot to lock the front door.
Today when I returned to the clinic at 5PM for patient treatments, Mabeline wasn't there. Cindi, a receptionist who lives in the clinic apartment, told me she sent Mabeline to the Dr. because she tried to pill a cat and was bit.
Saturday evening I told Mabeline not to do any Sunday treatments on her own. Sunday morning, I told her I would be in at 5PM for evening treatments, don't treat any patient until I get there. She has no animal or medication experience, she is not trained to perform any treatments. Plus we have a cat who is not friendly and a fearful dog who will lash out when in doubt...both need to be given pills.
Sunday AM she was in such a hurry to get to church, she didn't stick around for training. Sunday PM, she knew I would be there at 5:00, but decided to do treatments on her own. Mabeline tried to pill the cat and got bit. She watched me pill the cat Saturday and saw how the cat reacted and what trouble I had. What in the world made her think she could pill that cat on her own?
DuhDuhDuh. What part of "Do not do any treatments" is so difficult for a normal person to understand?
Mabeline is now on antibiotics and light duty. Six weeks employed and is already on light duty because she ignored instructions. I do hope her bite doesn't become infected, but I am just in need of ranting...what the hell was she thinking?!!! How stupid can a person be.
On the job injury, the corporation pays for the medical bills. It's the duhduhduh people like Mabeline that cost the corporation money and prevents the rest of us from getting pay raises.
The optomistic note for today: Last month our clinic cat expert gave us all a class on cat restraint and reading a cat's demeanor. After being bit, Mabeline now knows how important it is to "read" an animal before grabbing for it. Let's hope it sticks in her mind better than "lock the doors".
I am close to exceeding my patience level.
